Mental Health Nursing: Personal Statement

Mental health nursing involves taking care of people with mental disorders and distress. These mental disorders include schizophrenia, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, personality disorders, eating disorders, suicidal thoughts, paranoia, and self-harm. The main reason why I am applying for this course is that I realized that society needs more psychiatrists. The cases of mental health disorders are increasing, and people do not even seem to realize that they could be having any problem in their behavior. Amongst the patients includes young students, who are having mental issues because of the pressure from the family or peers.

The subject is interesting to me as it involves the study of the human brain and how the surrounding environment influences the behavior of an individual. The study of the human brain is quite interesting as you get to understand how people reason and what influences their decisions. With this, it will be quite easy to maintain good relationships with your peers. It will also make it easy to help people who could be faced with difficult situations in order not to have depression. Helping people avoid difficult situations will reduce the chances of medical disorders, which lead to the continued growth of the entire society.

Things that make me think that I am best suited for this course include that I have worked as a care assistant with Wyndford Locks Care Home. At Wyndford, I assisted patients in getting up and going to bed. I also helped them to dress up and undress, eat, and shower. I also helped in general tidying of the room and bed making. Talking to the patients was quite fun for me as it gave me a chance to learn new things and make friends. I have also studied NC Health and Social Care level 6 and Introduction to Health Care level 4. Introduction to health care entailed health and safety in care, health awareness, communication, health sector roles and responsibilities, employability skills. Health and Social Care comprise of Health, safety and protection issues, values and principles, human development and behavior, social influences, understanding mental health, and mental illness. It also comprises caring for people with dementia, the human body, HIV hepatitis B and hepatitis C infection, understanding the needs of older adult core skills, working with others, ICT, communication, and numeracy.

Current and previous studies relate well to the course that I have chosen as previously I have done a lot in Health and Social Care. Health and Social Care involve being able to identify signs of various diseases and taking care of patients. The social care aspect relates to mental health issues as most of the people who need social care are either suffering from a mental disorder or depression. Social care is a steppingstone that helped me to understand more about mental health and how to handle patients properly.

Other activities that I have participated in that help show my interest in the course include volunteering, which involved helping the patients clean their rooms on weekends. I have also worked as a peer counselor and mentor at school, whereby I was involved in helping patients with drug addiction problems. I also helped mentor students on their career journey by finding out what they were best for. The mental illness starts at a very young age, and I believe that my advice played a significant role in helping the students not fall victim to depression.

Some of the skills that I possess that will help me to complete the course successfully include excellent communication skills, timekeeping, respectful, caring, and compassionate. Excellent communication skills will help me interact well with the teachers and the rest of the students. Respect will help me maintain good relationships, which are crucial for success in an institution. I am also hardworking, punctual, conscientious, and have a logical approach. I am also able to follow instructions accurately and complete any job to high standards. At school, I was the chairperson of the Peer Counselors Club, a position I held for two years. The leadership position helped me to acquire new skills such as time management as I had to balance between classwork and my responsibilities.

My hobbies include reading and traveling, while my primary social activity is that of helping those in need. My hobbies relate well with the mental illness course as it is through reading that one can acquire more knowledge. Knowledge can be applied in solving the day-to-day problems and can be included when advising clients. Travelling also helps one learn new activities that could help in solving mental issues such as yoga. Wanting to help those in need is my greatest motivation for learning mental health nursing as I have seen a lot of people suffering from lack of medical attention. People are deprived of happiness as they do not have a solution to what they are going through. In the future, I want to start a rehabilitation center for those people with mental illnesses, and the course will equip me with the necessary knowledge of helping out the patients.
