Supply Chain Security Responses
Customs are generally held responsible for ensuring secure international trade. As imports are considered of significant importance in developing countries due to major revenue generation, their customs authority mainly focuses on the collection of revenue. On the other hand, the security of the border is the topmost priority of developed countries as they also engage in free trade. There exist two main security concerns in the supply chain process. Custom administration of the country has to make sure that the supply chain isn’t being used to trade weapons or components that can be used in the development of weapons.
Qatar’s policy of trade mainly focuses on creating a modern economy. They have introduced a lot of trade diversification programs in their country. They also held a support mission in the year 2015 that was conducted by the WCO in Doha, Qatar to analyze the performance of their customs authority. It was kind of a workshop that was held to make the customs officials of the country familiar with the WCO Framework of standards.
In the year 2018, a PCA diagnostic was also held in Doha to implement PCA functions in the country according to the guidelines of WCO PCA. The objective of the diagnoses was to analyze the methods used to perform the post-clearance audits and whether they meet the requirements of the Trade Facilitation Agreement.
Qatar is currently facing a severe crisis as in2017, some of the major gulf countries blocked Qatari ships and planes to enter their sea routes and airspace because they believed that Qatar was supporting terrorism through their trade routes. However, the country denied involvement in providing aid to any militant groups. The country is being pressurized because they refused to fulfill Saudi’s demands of ending relationships with Turkey and Iran. The issue is not resolved to date.
