Reflection Log: Recruitment and The Retention of Employees

My research study is based on investigating the impact of recruitment and the retention of employees. The study used the case study of the community nurses in the NHS. The study used a mixed method for its research on investigating the recruitment practices of community nurses in NHS. I gathered data on the best practices in terms of recruitment for employee retention with NHS focus. For this, secondary sources for the gathering of quantitative and qualitative data were used. I developed the literature review by the research objectives for guiding in my analysis.

I was very nervous at first. However, with more research, I became excited at the prospects of this study. I was anxious always in receiving the acknowledgement and critical reviews from my peers and superior for the work I have done. For some moments, I also felt lost, when I couldn’t effectively structure my research. I was unable to find enough literature on the link of recruitment practices and retention of employees in the NHS specifically, which bothered me at first. However, with the guidance of my instructor, I went past this barrier as well.

I was able to remain within the ethical protocols and research rigour. I used high quality secondary data and ensured that the data is not misrepresented without considering its context or limitations. I conducted objective analysis, and the journey helped me learn more about my potential than any other time. I learned about my pre-conceived notions and biases.

I consider my approach towards this project as effective. Even though I took more than expected time in planning and literature review for this project, once started, I was able to complete it within the time frame in a good manner. I also realised that my communication skills helped me a lot in communicating with my peers and my instructor. Furthermore, I was able to develop a quality review of literature by using a practised approach towards it. I have experience in skimming through research papers and extracting relevant knowledge in less time. This skill has more than strengthened with this project.

I came to learn a lot about organisational skills, time management and perseverance. These could be considered as the three key skills which were needed to complete this project successfully. I also learned that extracting the right information is a very difficult task at times. However, persistence and dedication help in each step of this process.

My project did not include any primary data, which I think might be the area for me that would need effort. I still need to learn planning for contingencies. I think I learned to be patient; however, there is still room for improvement. Delegation of work is something which I need to focus on in future. Taking control and micromanaging are my go-to skills; however, this has led me to problems. I need to keep my objectives in mind to better use resources.
