Personal Traits or Competencies for Project Managers

In the global project management process, several personal traits or competencies must be adopted to improve overall project management outcomes. One of the most pre-eminent personal traits or competencies is strong leadership. From execution to completion, the project manager must lead the whole team. Depending on the nature of the project and predictive outcomes, the project leader must be able to embrace the appropriate leadership style and approach. By playing an active role as a leader, the project manager has to motivate team members and show them directions to meet goals and objectives. Another critical competency is effective communication. The project manager has to facilitate adequate flow of information in the whole project management process. The project manager has to communicate with several stakeholders in different project activities.

Through improbable communication skills, the project manager can engage all key stakeholders precisely. Apart from it, the project manager must have negotiation skills, as it can help to resolve issues or conflicts to sustain the project process. Another crucial personal trait or competency is critical thinking. Analyzing the project situation with time is vital. Critical thinking can pull managers out of emotions and enable them to depict constructive criticism. In the project management process, the project manager should be cool in different pressure situations. Good behavior with project team members can lead to project success and sustainability.

The Project Background

The noticeable project is the development or construction of One Vanderbilt in New York City.  It is a 1,401-foot tall tower in the midtown east. It is one of the longest towers or buildings in the city. The tower contains 58 stories and 30,000-square-foot amenity space. It is a supertall development project, and the project manager needs different traits or competencies from initiation to completion (Barber, 2017).

Methods in Project Selection and Processes

The appropriate method in the project selection is the “benefit measurement method.” It is an effective method, which is based on the present value of cash inflow and outflow. The project owners or managers must derive possible cost benefits and conduct a valuable comparison to make a final decision. Several techniques in the benefit measurement methods are economic model, payback period, discounted cash flow, opportunity cost, cost ratio, scoring model, net present value, and internal rate of return (Monnappa, 2020).

On the other hand, in the project process, the appropriate method is agile. In this mega project, speed and flexibility are critical elements. Breaking down project milestones into short delivery cycles or sprints is better to enhance the visibility of project outcomes. The project manager has to demonstrate continuous improvements in the project, and the agile methodology is the best way to justify the purpose. The agile method enables real-time communication and motivates team members to adjust things swiftly to nurture the project and set the foundation for completing it on time (Layton, 2012). These are methodologies for both project method selection and process for “One Vanderbilt Project” in New York City.
